Overcome IBS with RTT Hypnotherapy

IBS makes our lives miserable. Restrictive diets like FODMAP can help reduce the symptoms. But why just treat the symptoms when you can address the root cause of why you have IBS?

It was 2014 when I was told I had IBS. I needed to go to the toilet 9 or 10 times a day. I found I had become intolerant to many types of food. I couldn’t even have a cup of coffee without being set off. It was making my life hell. I could never be far from a toilet, and I had to keep stepping out of meetings at work.
I finally asked for help from a doctor. They referred me to a nutritionist. They asked about my symptoms and talked to me about allergies. They told me to avoid gluten and go on a FODMAP diet. It helped a lot. By restricting what I ate, my gut improved. I missed the foods I had enjoyed eating but accepted that it was worth it for my regained freedom.
However, I noticed that every time I had a stressful experience, the symptoms of IBS would return. The diet and the lifestyle changes helped, but it made me think.
Was this diet lessening the symptoms but not really dealing with the real issue?
I had never had any issues with food when I was younger. I could eat anything. Besides hay fever, I never had any allergies. I researched and understood that IBS was an allergic reaction that made me intolerant to gluten and various other foods.
I learned that allergies occur when our immune system ‘overreacts’ to substances. But why had I become intolerant to substances that had not been a problem for 35 years? What was my body reacting to? Was it the food I suddenly could not eat or something else?
I wanted to understand why my body created this issue for me! The doctor and the nutritionist had rapidly come to a diagnosis and suggested that I should go on this restrictive diet. Yes, it did help, but it was like being told the standard doctor answer. ‘Take a tablet and deal with the symptoms.’
After a recommendation from a friend, I decided to try Hypnotherapy. I consulted an RTT Therapist (a particularly comprehensive approach developed by Marisa Peer). I was sceptical, but I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s give it a go.’
What I liked straight away about the RTT approach was that the Therapist was focused on getting to the underlying cause. They wanted to get to the root cause, not just discuss the symptoms and push me out the door. They were the first person I had seen about IBS to say ‘Let’s deal with the real reason this started’ and not just tell me to change what I eat and drank’ so that the symptoms were more manageable!

Did the RTT Hypnotherapy help me?

2 Key things happened as a result of my RTT Hypnotherapy session.
Firstly, I discovered that the IBS was not a natural intolerance but was a reaction to the the stress that I had been going through. I had a lot of stress at work and at that time a lot of stress in my personal life. Being in this stressful state was causing my nervous system to be on a state of continual alert. This led to my immune system overreacting to these stresses and causing food intolerances and IBS. So the root cause of my IBS was not about food. It was about the anxiety and stress. The solution was not cutting out lots of different foods. The solution came through using hypnotherapy to reduce my anxiety and the reaction in my my immune system.
Secondly, unlike the doctor and the nutritionist, the RTT Therapist advised that we focus on making my mind more resistant to the stresses and anxiety causing the IBS. So under hypnosis, we dialled down the anxiety and allowed my body to understand that it could stop overreacting to the foods I had become intolerant to.
Within two months, all of my food intolerances disappeared. I could drink coffee again. I could eat gluten; I could eat dairy. My stomach was calm. I only needed the toile 2 or 3 times a day. I didn’t have to worry about where I went. I no longer had to rush out of meetings in the office.
RTT hypnotherapy changed my life. It not only enabled the IBS to go away. I also found I was much less anxious; the pain I held in my back and shoulders disappeared. I found I had the courage to make the changes I wanted to make in my life.
I decided that I would become an RTT Therapist. Since then, I have worked full-time as an RTT Therapist and a Clinical Hypnotherapist. I specialise in helping people with Anxiety and Physical issues such as IBS, Fibromyalgia, Eczema and Asthma. I even help people with Auto-Immune Disorders.

About Hypnotherapy and IBS
Hypnotherapy is an effective treatment for individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Here’s how and why it is an effective treatment.

1. Gut-Brain Connection:

There is a strong connection between the gut and the brain, often called the gut-brain axis. Hypnotherapy accesses this connection by using suggestions and visualisations to impact gut function and reduce symptoms positively. It can help regulate bowel movements, decrease pain perception, and improve overall gut motility.
2. Relaxation:
Hypnotherapy induces a deep state of relaxation, which can help reduce the stress and anxiety, which often worsen IBS symptoms. Relaxation techniques used in hypnotherapy can help promote overall well-being and a sense of calm.

3. Addressing Psychological Factors:

IBS is known to have a significant psychological component, with stress, anxiety, and emotional factors often triggering IBS and then exacerbating symptoms. Hypnotherapy can help identify and address these underlying psychological factors contributing to IBS symptoms. Working with a trained hypnotherapist allows individuals to explore and resolve any emotional or psychological issues impacting their condition.

4. Modifying Perception and Response:

Hypnotherapy can help individuals with IBS modify their perception and response to gut sensations. It can assist in reducing hypersensitivity to certain stimuli, such as bloating or abdominal discomfort, by altering how the brain interprets these signals. By changing the response patterns, hypnotherapy can help individuals better manage and cope with IBS symptoms.
